Most electrical problems start small and get worse. A breaker that trips occasionally becomes one that trips constantly. An outlet that feels warm becomes one that smells like burning plastic. A flickering light becomes a flickering light on three circuits. If something in your home's electrical system isn't behaving the way it should, the right move is a professional look — not waiting to see if it sorts itself out.

Ehling Electric provides fast, accurate electrical troubleshooting and repairs for homeowners throughout Bucks County and Montgomery County. We find the problem, tell you exactly what's causing it, and fix it correctly the first time.

Common Problems We Fix

Dead Outlets An outlet that stops working is usually one of three things: a tripped GFCI somewhere else on the circuit (often in a bathroom or kitchen you didn't think to check), a tripped breaker, or a failed connection inside the outlet or at the panel. We trace the circuit, find the cause, and repair it — without replacing things that don't need replacing.

Breakers That Keep Tripping A breaker that trips once when you run too many things at once is doing its job. A breaker that trips regularly under normal loads is telling you something: the circuit is overloaded, there's a fault somewhere downstream, or the breaker itself is failing. We determine which and fix it — which sometimes means adding a circuit, not just resetting the breaker.

Flickering or Dimming Lights Lights that flicker when a large appliance starts up — your HVAC, refrigerator, or washing machine — usually indicate that your wiring is undersized for the load on that circuit, or that your panel is near capacity. Lights that flicker on their own, without an obvious trigger, are more concerning and often point to a loose connection somewhere in the circuit. Both are worth investigating.

Burning Smell from Outlets or Panel This is not a wait-and-see situation. A burning smell near any outlet, switch, or your electrical panel means there is heat somewhere there shouldn't be. Call us the same day. In the meantime, if the smell is strong or accompanied by any discoloration or visible damage, stop using that circuit entirely.

Outlets That Are Warm to the Touch An outlet should never be warm. Warmth at an outlet face means the connection inside is loose, arcing, or carrying more load than the wiring can handle safely. It's a fire risk, not a minor inconvenience.

GFCI Outlets That Won't Reset A GFCI outlet that trips and won't reset is either detecting a genuine ground fault somewhere on the circuit — which means there's a real problem — or the GFCI device itself has failed. We test the circuit to determine which and replace what needs replacing.

Buzzing or Humming from Switches or Outlets A faint buzzing from a dimmer paired with the wrong type of LED bulb is usually harmless. Buzzing from a standard switch or outlet is not — it indicates arcing, which is a fire hazard. We don't guess; we open the device and look.

No Power to a Room or Area If an entire room or section of your home loses power, the cause is almost always either a tripped breaker, a failed GFCI that controls a whole circuit, or a loose connection at a junction box somewhere in the circuit. We trace it systematically rather than starting with the most expensive explanation.

Outdoor Outlets Not Working Outdoor GFCI circuits are exposed to more moisture and temperature variation than indoor circuits, and the outlets and their wiring fail more often as a result. We test the circuit, replace failed devices, and check that outdoor boxes are properly sealed and weatherproofed.

When Is It an Emergency?

Call immediately — don't wait for a scheduled appointment — if you experience any of the following:

  • A burning smell from any outlet, switch, or your electrical panel

  • An outlet or switch with visible scorch marks or discoloration

  • Sparks when plugging something in (more than a tiny, brief snap)

  • A breaker that trips immediately every time you reset it

  • Any sign of heat — warmth, smell, or discoloration — near your panel

These are not overreactions. They are the warning signs that precede electrical fires. If you're uncertain whether what you're seeing qualifies, call us and describe it — we'll tell you honestly whether it needs same-day attention.

Our Diagnostic Process

When we arrive, we start with what you've observed — when it happens, what was running at the time, whether it's gotten worse. Then we trace the circuit systematically: testing at the device, at the junction boxes, and at the panel. We use proper testing equipment, not guesswork, and we won't recommend replacing a panel because of a tripped breaker or a new service entrance because of a failed outlet.

We tell you what we found, what caused it, and what it costs to fix — before we fix it. If we find something else worth knowing about while we're in there, we'll tell you about it separately, not fold it into the repair without asking.
